the president has been described in past debates as no drama obama. and that is a compliment by the way. columnist jerry sibe in the "wall street journal" says that governor romney needs to counter that by creating his own drama. i'll quote jerry e. did that on at least one occasion during the primary season when in a high profile debate in florida he tphroers flee tk defended both his wealth and the way he acquired it and mocked former representative newt gingrich's dream of building a colony on the moon. you know, what brad that was the night, remember that night, that really ended gingrich's run and it cleared the way for romney's victoria tree. does governor romney tomorrow night need to pull off similar drama? >> i think he's got to be forceful, direct, yet respectful to the president. i happen to believe substance triumphs style every time. we saw the president recently get rattled when a univision presenter questioned the president respectfully but directly on immigration. the president was clearly annoyed. and i think romney to be effective mu

look at obama being in the lead nationally and in these targeted states, going into the debate, if, if we sort of change that debate narrative and obama won it and then these numbers come out, people already starting to talk about the race being over. i think it would be even more significant. so just really points up how big that debate performance of romney was to overcome all this news that's been working against him for a while now. jenna: that is interesting painting that other scenario if it didn't happen that way but it did. in the news cycle over next several days, does it wipe out the debate performance by the president because these new numbers look more positive than expected? >> doesn't wipe it out. romney would much rather have these 8.3 and rising and the 7.8% does talk, let him talk about you who the recovery's moving apace. the more significant thing, jenna, though is what the polls were saying before any of this. suddenly we were seeing 57% of americans starting to say that they thought the country was in recovery. only 43% thought it wasn't. there is a real feeling ou

i think clearly president obama missed the opportunity to do that during the debate. he kind of let mr. romney climb out of that kind of space that they had put him in, but there will be many other opportunities as we see the president's back strong on the stump hammering romney. there will be another debate. we forget it's a long time ago, mondale wins the first debate against reagan, reagan comes back and cleans his clock in the second one. john kerry in 2004, you remember, won the first debate, against george bush. george bush similarly seemed very unhappy to be there as the president. bush comes back in the second one and wins, goes on to win. so lots of opportunity for the president to come back. but clearly let romney back into this. >> i guess, sam, how far is mitt going to go towards the middle? i mean, bill brings up the question of reproductive rights, the obama care question is certainly still, you know, how much is mitt romney going to embrace massachusetts, his legacy there, in the coming weeks? it's a sharp pivot. >> wasn't just during the debate. he was

but right now the obama campaign is solidly and consistently ahead. tactically what that means is the obama campaign has to convert being ahead in people's preferences to actual votes. since they are clearly ahead, a good time to get those votes cast is right now. because thanks to early voting, people are casting ballots right now. so this lead that they have now in the polls can be banked. it can be turned into actual votes while they're still ahead, even if they don't end up being this far ahead by election day. iowa became the first swing state in the nation where voters are actually voting early in person. iowa has interesting rules where if you get enough signatures from your area, you can ask to have a pop-up popping place, sort of like if food places offered voting. obama voters asked for a pop-up voting place at the university of northern iowa. they had the first lady at the go vote now event. they had the first lady speak and they had the university marching band lead people from the audience of the first lady's speech directly to the voting
